The South
Bend Parks and Recreation Department
offers computer training for the most
commonly used software, Microsoft Office
2003. All classes are instructor led,
hands on training in our state of the
art computer lab. Each student receives
a comprehensive manual, practice files
on a flash drive and a quick reference
card at no additional cost. Whether you
seek personal growth in the knowledge of
computers, or training to enhance your
job skills, we offer training to fill
your needs. Classes are generally
offered in two levels. The first level
is an introductory class while the
second level is more advanced. Classes
indicated with a (*) require a
prerequisite class or equivalent
knowledge.
All classes are held in the O’Brien
Recreation Center and are two hours
long. Class sizes are limited to eight
students, with a three-student minimum
required to hold a class. Seniors (age
55+) receive a $5.00 discount on all
computer classes. Advance registration
is required one week prior to the
beginning of class.

Computer Basics & Windows XP – Level
1
Learn about basic computer concepts and
terminology. This class will also
introduce you to the fundamentals of XP.
In addition, students will be introduced
to commonly used software such as word
processing, spreadsheets and email.
Training will be provided for exploring
the Internet. You will also learn how to
minimize, maximize and move windows. We
will also show you how to manage and
save files. This is a great class for
first time users.

Windows XP – Level 2*
Discover the advanced aspects of Windows
XP. You will learn to use more advanced
techniques to customize Windows XP.
We’ll introduce you to the operating
system’s new programs such as Sound
Recorder and Movie Maker. We’ll also
show you how to access the Internet and
setup basic e-mail.
Prerequisite: Windows XP, Level 1
or equivalent

Word 2003 – Level 1*
Learn the basic techniques of working
with Word. Whether for your own use or
for job training; learn the basics of
word processing using Microsoft Word;
how to open, create and work with a
document. You will also learn how to
find, replace, cut and copy text; and
how to format text and create fancy
documents. We’ll also show you how to
work with tables.
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2
or equivalent

Word 2003 – Level 2*
This class builds on the skills learned
in Word Level 1. Advanced techniques of
working with Word are explained. You
will be trained to work with styles and
templates, how to draw, and insert
pictures and graphics. You will also
learn how to perform a mail merge, work
with outlines, work with long documents,
and create web pages with Word.
Prerequisite: Word-Level 1 &
Windows or equivalent

Excel 2003 – Level 1*
This class offers training in
spreadsheet fundamentals. You will learn
to create, open and work with
spreadsheets. You will also learn how to
enhance spreadsheets by using formatting
techniques. We’ll instruct you on how to
create and work with charts and how to
create formulas to perform a variety of
calculations.

or equivalent

Excel 2003 – Level 2*
Improve job skills by learning to create
and use the more advanced formulas in
Excel, to manage database information
using lists and to automate tasks with
macros. Learn to analyze information
using Pivot Tables, how to use Excel
with other programs and the Internet.
Learn how to create “What If” scenarios
and more.
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2
or equivalent, and Excel Level 1 or
equivalent

Access 2003 – Level 1*
Training in database fundamentals: what
is a database; how to enter, edit, and
delete information. You will create a
database and customize it to meet your
specific needs. In addition, you will
find out how to find, filter, and sort
information in a database.
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2
or equivalent

Access 2003 – Level 2*
Students will learn to work with
queries, forms and reports. You will
learn to format forms and reports to
enhance the appearance and utility of
both. You will also learn to work with
macros and how to use Access with other
programs.
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2
or equivalent, and Access Level 1 or
equivalent

Power Point 2003 – Level 1*
The level 1 class introduces you to the
basic Power Point concepts such as
understanding the Power Point screen,
using menus and creating a simple
presentation. Training also includes how
to edit a presentation, format a
presentation using colors, bullets and
alignment. Finally, you will learn to
add drawing and work with graphics to
enhance your presentation.
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2
or equivalent.

Power Point 2003 – Level 2*
This course builds on to the Level 1
class and adds additional instruction on
features such as working with WordArt,
tables and graphics and organization
charts. Training includes sections on
delivering the presentation, working
with multimedia, working with other
programs and the Internet.
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2
or equivalent, and Power Point Level 1
or equivalent
Fee: 5 Classes for $110/R,
$115/NR
Publisher 2003 – Level 1*
Learn to create powerful publications
for your organization or business. You
will create a new publication from
planning and design to final printing.
Also included is training in using
drawing and working with shapes and
images, and performing a Mail Merge.
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2
or equivalent
Fee: 6 classes for $130/R,
$135/NR
One-on-One Instruction
Get a half hour (or more) of personal
instruction. Advise the instructor in
advance of what problems you wish to
cover. If you have a Notebook or laptop
computer, bring it with you. Appointment
times run every half hour from 9:00 am
to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
Preregistration required.
Prerequisite: None
