Class Calendar
If you need new job skills, want
to gain personal knowledge of computer software, or just
want to learn basics computer skill; the South Bend
Parks and Recreation Department is just the place for
you! We offer computer training for the novice or
advanced users in the most commonly used software such
as Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007. All classes are
instructor led, including hands on training in our state
of the art computer lab. Each student receives a
comprehensive manual, practice files on a flash drive
and a quick reference card at no additional cost.
Classes are generally offered in
multiple levels. The first level is an introductory
class while the second and subsequent level is more
advanced.
Classes indicated with an (*) require a prerequisite
class or equivalent knowledge.
All
classes are held in the O’Brien Recreation Center and
are two hours long and are scheduled for four days
(total 8 hours). Class sizes are limited to eight
students, with a three-student minimum required to hold
a class.
Advance registration is required one week prior to the
beginning of class.

Available Classes:
Introduction to Computers,
Operating Systems, Networks & Internet
Includes basic concepts of operation, maintenance, data
storage and retrieval, file management and file sharing.
The class focuses on Windows XP, Internet, with an
Introduction to Web Browsers (Internet Explorer 6 or 7),
E-mail (Outlook) and Web Based E-mail (Hotmail, Yahoo,
Gmail, etc.).
Computer Basics & Windows XP–Level 1
Fee: 6 classes for $130/R, $135/NR
Windows XP – Level 2*
Discover the advanced aspects of Windows XP. You will
learn to use more advanced techniques to customize
Windows XP. We’ll introduce you to the operating
system’s new programs such as Sound Recorder and Movie
Maker. We’ll also show you how to access the Internet
and setup basic e-mail.
Prerequisite: Windows XP, Level 1 or equivalent

Word Processing
Introductory (Level 1) or Advanced (Level 2) texbook.
Includes document creation, formatting, proofreading and
editing. Web integration, linking and embedding.
Advanced course, recommended for most students, includes
mail merge and tables. Word 2003 or Word 2007
Word (2003 or 2007) – Level 1*
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2 or equivalent
Fee: 5 Classes for $110/R, $115/NR
Word (2003 or 2007) – Level 2*
Prerequisite: Word-Level 1 & Windows or equivalent

Spreadsheets
Introductory (Level 1) or Advanced (Level 2) textbook.
Includes financial report creation, formatting, editing,
charting, calculations, formulas, Web integration,
linking and embedding and more. Excel 2003 or Excel 2007
Excel (2003 or 2007) – Level 1*
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2 or equivalent
Fee: 6 classes for $130/R, $135/NR
Excel (2003 or 2007)– Level 2*
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2 or equivalent, and

Database
Introductory (Level 1) or Advanced (Level 2) textbook.
Includes database creation, formatting, editing,
relationships, queries, linking and embedding. Access

Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2 or equivalent

Introduction to Page Layout and Design

Resumé Writing
Learn how prepare an attention-getting resumé using
Microsoft Word. Also, discover job seeking internet
skills. This is a one day, two hour seminar.

Introductory (Level 1) or Advanced (Level 2) textbook.
Includes presentation creation, design, multimedia,
proofreading, editing, Web integration, linking and

Power Point (2003 or 2007) – Level 1*
Prerequisite: Windows Level 1 & 2 or equivalent.

One-on-One Instruction
Get a half hour (or more) of personal instruction.
Advise the instructor in advance of what problems you
wish to cover. If you have a Notebook or laptop
computer, bring it with you. Appointment times run every
half hour from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through
Friday. Preregistration required.
Prerequisite: None
